The open has shown me how much I’ve changed in 1 year

One year ago, during a discussion with my former coach. I remember saying “I love competing, but I will never be able to compete outside of these smaller local competitions.” I completely believed this.

A few months later I started working with another local coach on the side. After gaining a little confidence, I made a decision that I deserve better, and no one will give it to me if I don’t demand it. I changed gyms, cut dozens of people out of my life, and worked my ass off. It’s been hard….but it’s also been amazing.

In a little over a year my mindset has changed from “I could never do that” to “that would be an amazing experience, maybe I could make a team in the next couple years” to my most recent realization. My team is currently in 4th in our region after 3 weeks of Open competition. I am currently the #4 girl on our team roster. The top 3 girls will all likely qualify as individuals. A trip to regionals on my team is completely realistic for me, whether it is as an alternate or a full member.

It’s just as much about working hard and surrounding yourself with the right people as it is about pure talent. No matter how this plays out, I’m proud of the changes I’ve made :)

Competed this weekend in 20-30 degree weather, outside…

WOD 5 was a deadlift ladder. No warm-up area.Athletes had to stand around outside 20-30 minutes in the cold with no opportunity to warm up your deadlift, then go for a max deadlift (20 sec to lift, 10 sec to rest/rotate).

I was like:

Needless to say lots of people really hurt themselves. This is a large competition in my area thrown buy a reputable gym, run by a games athlete. This programming was idiotic and dangerous. I won’t be doing this one next year….CRAZY

When I loved myself enough, I began leaving whatever wasn’t healthy. This meant people, jobs, my own beliefs and habits - anything that kept me small.
My judgement called it disloyal. Now I see it as self-loving.

In 2 weeks I will get to spend 2 weeks climbing Machu Picchu and trekking in the Amazon. I refuse to care about anything else until I get back….except my PRs :)
